The Dallas Cowboys have a cornerback problem. With two of their original starting three cornerbacks hurt for the season, they enter the playoffs with huge question marks. Especially at outside cornerback opposite Trevon Diggs.
Now that the Cowboys must take care of the seemingly immortal Tom Brady, the problem seems heightened. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers boast two 1,000-yard receivers and Brady has all the deadly ability to hurt any weak spot in your secondary and keep at it.
As such, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin are the Cowboys' most significant problems. Earlier this week, I wrote about Evans essentially daring DC Dan Quinn to run Cover 1 on Monday.
The Cowboys will be forced to decide if they want Trevon Diggs traveling with Evans or if they'll let him do what he's done most of the season and stay on the right side of the field. Meanwhile, Quinn has to decide if he wants to help out his corners with two safeties up high.
But the list of defensive concerns for the Cowboys doesn't stop there. There are other players to take care of including the X-factor to the game per Tampa Bay Bucs expert and A to Z Sports Managing Editor Evan Winter.
Winter joined my nightly show A to Z Sports Dallas Primetime, to provide insight into who are the 2022 Bucs. Asked who was his X-factor for the Bucs offense, his response was a surprising one.
"It's definitely gotta be Russell Gage," said Winter. "What he's been doing these last few weeks now that he's healthy. And just the clutch plays that he's been making. And then plus, just his ability to play both the inside and the outside."
From Weeks 15-17 (Bucs played starters just one half in Week 18), Gage has averaged over five catches per game and 52 receiving yards per Pro Football Reference. If defenses focus too much of their efforts against Evans and Godwin, he can be dangerous.
"It's that whole clutch factor for the entire offense and giving Tom Brady that safety blanket on those crucial downs."
That sets up an interesting match-up between Gage and whoever CB3 is for Dallas. If the Cowboys decide to shadow Evans with Diggs and Godwin faces rookie DaRon Bland inside, then it's Gage vs. Nahshon Wright or Xavier Rhodes or Trayvon Mullen.
You can never have too many cornerbacks in the NFL. The Cowboys are living proof of it. Can they survive the weak spot against the GOAT? We'll find out Monday Night.
