The Miami Dolphins were fortunate to grab both a Pro Bowl left tackle and starting center last offseason. Terron Armstead and Connor Williams being franchise-changing free agent acquisitions.
Right guard Robert Hunt has been the Dolphins most reliable starter on the offensive line over the past two seasons. His versatility to play tackle as well makes him one of the Dolphins best players.
As far as right tackle and left guard, there's a much bigger need with the second one. Brandon Shell played well enough this past season to warrant another year in Miami as a starter, but second-year pro Liam Eichenberg? Not so much.
Having been moved around the line his rookie year, the Dolphins settled him at left guard but a knee injury took away some viable snaps that have only hurt any progression he has had.
Even if the Dolphins still think highly of Eichenberg, a veteran presence is needed. One with experience, high-value play and stability.
Enter Rodger Saffold.
The 2-time Pro Bowler has started 173 of his 176 career games over 13 years in the NFL. Predominantly with the St. Louis/ LA Rams.
Most recently, Saffold is coming off a 16-game season for the Tennessee Titans, who are likely going to re-load, as opposed to a full re-build. Meaning they will opt for a youth movement.
Assuming Saffold has another season in him, as health hasn't been an overarching issue, Saffold is best suited for a playoff contender with a need/ short-term fix at left guard.
The Miami Dolphins meet the bill.
On top of what would be a clear upgrade at LG, a one-year rental for the Pro Bowler is only around $5 million.
Considering his price point and skill check both boxes, it makes sense that the Dolphins will want to upgrade their depth in addition to their starters. Even if it puts Eichenberg as a backup for a year, health and instability won't help QB Tua Tagovailoa stay upright.
Something he and the team desperately need.
