Buccaneers are affecting the NFC Championship game without even playing in it

If you're a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, then the 2002-2003 NFC Championship win over the Philadelphia Eagles is easily one of your favorite memories of all-time.
And apparently, it's still having an effect on the NFL over 20 years later.
That's because San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is using the tape from that game to fuel his squad's motivation for this weekend's matchup in Philadelphia.
"We always do some little stuff. Today we watched the 2002 NFC Championship game with the Bucs in Philly," Shanahan said Friday. "It was awesome to watch. It was a little bit boring because they had 33 runs for 45 yards, 1.5 per carry and had 26 points. Tampa Bay’s defense was awesome in that game and [Former Tampa Bay Buccaneers CB] Ronde Barber, I always knew how great Ronde was, but that game was as good as it gets. That’s why my mind will be blown if he’s not in the Hall of Fame soon.”
It's not that the team needs any extra motivation – that's already there. The 49ers showed this last weekend against the Dallas Cowboys.
Shanahan's strategy is more to show his team that no one is safe in the playoffs. It doesn't matter where the game is played or who the opposition represents.
And, he wants his team to understand what Sunday's contest entails in terms of the overall weight of the game. Sure, a lot of players look at the playoffs as just another series of games.
But for some of them, this is the biggest game of their lives.
There's nothing wrong with taking that into account, either. Especially when playing in the hostile environment that is The Linc.
But at the same time, the guys need to know that everything can -and likely will- fall into place as long as they do their jobs.

"You just like to show people the atmosphere," said Shanahan. "I know that was the last game at the Vet, but there’s parallel. You go pick a game at almost any time and you see parallels in everything. Players are all the same, different shoulder pads a little bit. The last time we watched the ‘82 game and it was much different shoulder pads, but they’re all great athletes who play at a high level. Rules are a little bit different, but it’s all the same stuff.
"I love showing the guys, to make people aware of the moment they’re in now, because sometimes people don’t realize that until they’re a little bit older.”
The players really appreciate Shanahan's strategy, as well.
“Yeah, I mean that’s one of the best things I think coach does is go back in time and look at games and moments in time where something was on the line and you can learn from it," quarterback Brock Purdy told reporters. "You could always learn from history because history tends to repeat itself whether that’s in sports or in life in general. So it’s cool to go back and try to feel where the teams were, how the environment was, and learn from the good and the bad of everything. So it’s cool how coach does that and I feel like he gets a good response out of the team when he shows those kinds of things.”
Hell, even 49ers general manager and Buccaneers legend John Lynch was in on the fun. He may have even enjoyed it a bit too much.
"Yeah, he came into my office right before when I was going through it to get prepared to show the team," said Shanahan. "He sat down and enjoyed watching it for about 10 seconds and he got up and was pacing the room. He didn’t even realize it. I’m like, what’s going on with you right now? And he is like, what? What do you mean? And then he goes, oh yeah, this brings back some feelings.”
Another takeaway for Shanahan's squad is the opportunity to live in NFL infamy and lore with a win. As we can see, the Buccaneers' big win over the Eagles is still relevant two decades later.
And it's not just in a Tampa Bay-related setting. It's in a setting that is completely across the entire country – one that is nearly 3,000 miles away.
If that's not enough to add motivation, I don't know what it is.
Even Buccaneers fans should be motivated after hearing/reading this.
