The Tennessee Titans have found their next General Manager in San Francisco 49ers Director of Player Personnel Ran Carthon.

Anytime a new GM or coach is hired, it is generally a time for optimism and hope within an organization and fanbase. A new hire symbolizes a fresh start, a new era, and another opportunity to grow into one of the NFL's elite franchises.

That optimism within the Titans fanbase right now is well warranted. With the Arizona Cardinals hiring former Titans Director of Player Personnel Monti Ossenfort for their GM opening, Tennessee had the rare opportunity to be the only GM job opening and choose from every candidate from around the league, and they landed the very best.

Carthon is a 41-year old former running back that played his collegiate football at the University of Florida before three years in the NFL with the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions.

Upon retirement, Carthon got involved in the scouting world, and quickly climbed the ladder when he was hired by the St. Louis Rams as Director of Player Personnel in 2012. In 2017, Carthon would join the San Francisco 49ers in a similar role as Director of Pro Personnel.

It was in San Francisco under General Manager John Lynch that Carthon became a rising star in the football world and gained even more experience. It is also where he padded an impressive resume that separated him from the rest of the up-and-coming GM candidates.

As Director of Player Personnel, Carthon was responsible for the team’s evaluation of college talent and pro scouting for free agency, as well as market analysis for every free agent class.

"In pro scouting, we’re in charge of the daily maintenance of the waiver wire, which is every player that’s cut and brought on the street," said Carthon of is role back in 2019. "So, we look at that and determine if those guys have a fit and role for the Niners. We also do the week-to-week scouting reports during the season that we meet with the coaches on to help prep for upcoming opponents and we also do the free agency process for free agents that are in the league. I evaluate each and every one of those players, and bring them to the attention of our GM and head coach."

At 41-years old, Carthon has already had a decade of experience in roster construction. He has spent six of those years playing an instrumental part in building one of the most talented and sustainable rosters in the NFL today with San Francisco.

Carthon was part of the staff that did collegiate scouting and drafted Nick Bosa, Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, Talanoa Hufanga, and Bradon Aiyuk among others.

His pro scouting led the 49ers to signing Charvarius Ward this past offseason and trading for Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams over the years. His track record speaks for itself.

Bringing in Carthon, who has experience building a modern offense, is a great compliment to Mike Vrabel's defensive background. Now the mission will be finding an offensive coordinator to design a creative and modern offensive scheme and rebuilding the Titans' offense to be explosive and sustainable. This is really a good start.
