The Dallas Cowboys are likely to look at the quarterback position this offseason. But not in the way that many people would expect.

Dak Prescott is safe as the starting quarterback of the team and is even a likely candidate for a contract extension later this year. Such a move would open up significant cap space for the Cowboys that would in turn allow them to keep multiple free agents and even add some outside players to bolster the roster.

But the reason why they will likely look at quarterback is because of the backup job.

Cooper Rush is one of the players set to hit free agency and he's more than proved his worth by going 5-1 over six career starts. The Cowboys are likely expecting Rush to receive interest from teams around the NFL that witnessed Rush keep the season alive in 2022 by winning four out of five starts.

But former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum may have forgotten about Rush's impressive run as a backup quarterback last season. In a segment for Get Up ESPN, the current NFL insider talked about the Cowboys' need to draft a quarterback while not even taking into consideration Rush.

While I understand Tannenbaum's point about throwing darts in the NFL Draft to hit on quarterbacks and have options, the Cowboys already have a solid option at QB2 if they decide to re-sign Rush. While he likely won't be cheap, he likely won't be very expensive either.

At the end of the day, the Cowboys offense wasn't really great throughout Rush's starts. Rather, he did just enough to keep the season afloat by taking care of the football and managing the game.

The Cowboys will have a tougher decision than first meets the eye, though. Part of what made Rush very valuable for Dallas was his knowledge and time spent in Kellen Moore's system. Now it'll be Mike McCarthy's West Coast offense in town.

Whatever choice they ultimately make, they have to at least take Cooper Rush into serious consideration before free agency even starts.
