The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Cincinnati Bengals in the 2022 AFC Championship game. It's now Wednesday and that sentence still has meaning behind it. The Chiefs did something that no one believed they could heading into that game.
The odds were truly stacked against them despite being at home. They hadn't beaten Burrow and the Bengals yet, in three tries that is, so the odds were pretty slim. Not to mention their superstar MVP quarterback dealt with a high ankle injury, and they lost their best cornerback, second-best linebacker, and top three receivers in the game.
Yet, with all that going on, players stepped up, and no one stepped up more than Marquez Valdes-Scantling.
“I don’t know," Valdes-Scantling said when asked if anything was different. "The ball just got put in the air and I made the play. (There’s) not really any special secret. No secret sauce, just the ball went up (and) made the plays.”
MVS, as they call him, finished with a season-high 116 receiving yards, with six catches and a touchdown to go along with it. And man, that touchdown, was huge. It was one of the best touchdowns of the season when you factor in the catch, throw, and circumstances surrounding the play.
“Yeah, so actually I was like the last read on that play and it was like a zero coverage to me and the cornerback," MVS told reporters. "I think they doubled Trav (Kelce) – he was the first read. And once I (saw) that, the safety trigger on Trav and the corner was outside leverage I was like, ‘Yo, Pat, throw me the ball,’ (and) I threw my hand up. He’s always finding a way to get people the ball. He has eyes all over his head. He made it happen.”
In this game, Travis Kelce was also dealing with an injury. In any other game, Kelce would be Mahomes' security blanket because he was always open. This time it was MVS.
The trust was there between the two of them, and there is a huge chance that it will need to be there in two weeks. MVS played his best game as a Chief when JuJu Smith-Schuster, Mecole Hardman, and Kadarius Toney weren't available, MVS acted as a wide receiver one.
If he has to, let's see if he can do it in the biggest game of his career.
