Pro Football Focus recently named the players most likely to be released by each NFL team this offseason and they went with an obvious choice for the Philadelphia Eagles.
PFF's Brad Spielberger thinks running back Trey Sermon is the Eagles' biggest "cut candidate".
The Eagles have a ton of pending free agents and have to extend quarterback Jalen Hurts to a monster new deal, so the lack of obvious cut candidates isn’t ideal.
Sermon was brought aboard after he was waived by the San Francisco 49ers, but he logged just eight total snaps in Weeks 4 and 5 before failing to see the field again.
This seems like a fairly easy decision for the Eagles.
Philadelphia needs to clear as much cap space as possible. And while releasing Sermon would only save the Eagles around $1.1 million, it's still an easy way to save some cap space.
There's absolutely no point in Philadelphia keeping Sermon around for another season.
The former third-round pick barely saw the field for the Eagles last season after being claimed off waivers from the San Francisco 49ers. It would be an extreme misuse of a roster spot to bring Sermon back in 2023.
Philly can find a better fit at running back in the later rounds of the 2023 NFL Draft.
