The Nashville Predators are still caught in no man's land.
After a dismal effort against Boston on Thursday, followed by a spectacular offensive showing Saturday against Florida, the Preds still do not know if they are sellers at this year's deadline. It may come down to Sunday's game against Minnesota, a team they trail in the Central Division standings and one they would almost certainly have to leap in order to make the playoffs.
Rumors have been swirling about who David Poile might be willing to trade, if the team is selling. Mattias Ekholm, Dante Fabbro, and even Juuse Saros have come up in conversation as potential options.
Well, you can add Tanner Jeannot to the list.
According to long time hockey columnist Larry Brooks of The New York Post, the Preds are trying to work out an extension for pending restricted free agent Tanner Jeannot. But if they are unable to get it figured out before the deadline (March 3rd), they "will be willing to engage with several teams" on a trade.
Brooks mentioned the New York Rangers as a team who may be interested in Jeannot. Incidentally, the Rangers had a scout at Saturday's game against the Panthers at Bridgestone Arena (along with several other teams).
Tanner Jeannot had a fantastic rookie campaign in 2021-22, but has taken a step back in his development this season. He had 41 points, including 24 goals in 81 games last season, but has only 14 points and five goals through 51 games this season. His shooting percentage has fallen off a cliff, from 19.4% last year to just 5.9% this year.
Much of that could be attributed to him being shuffled around the lineup. The "Herd Line" was broken up for most of the first half of the season, but has recently been reunited with mostly positive results.
Jeannot's skill set would be intriguing to contending teams looking for size and toughness at the forward position, but without sacrificing too much skill. The fact that Jeannot is an RFA and will be relatively cheap to re-sign beyond 2023 is another added bonus.
While I am not convinced David Poile would be willing to part with Tanner Jeannot, as I think he still sees Jeannot as part of the "core of the future", there's no denying Jeannot would get a significant return, especially to teams looking for inexpensive NHL ready players. A top pick and or a top prospect wouldn't be out of the question for Jeannot.
