The Dallas Cowboys are well aware that the NFC East won't be an easy division to play in next season. That much already was evident in 2022 as the group had a combined 45-23-1 and got three representatives in the NFL playoffs.
The Philadelphia Eagles went to the Super Bowl and although they lost it, they had a fantastic 14-3 season. And to prove their legitimacy, they went tit-for-tat with the Kansas City Chiefs in an epic championship clash.
Prior to that, the Cowboys and New York Giants both fell in the Divisional Round, netting a playoff win apiece. And even the worst NFC East squad, the Washington Commanders avoided a losing record by going 8-8-1.
Following the latest NFL news, it's the Commanders who appear close to a significant boost that could turn them from pretenders to contenders within the division.
Big news in the NFC East
According to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, "Eric Bieniemy, current Chiefs offensive coordinator, will interview for the Commanders OC job on Thursday and is considered a 'top candidate' for the role."
That could spell danger for the division.
Bieniemy has been notoriously left out of coaching hires with every type of excuse. Some have cited "poor interviews" to discredit the Chiefs OC. Others have claimed that his success has been reliant on Andy Reid's scheme.
Bieniemy is one of the best examples that prove the NFL's decision-makers remain stuck when it comes to the hiring of Black head coaches. though.
He has all the credentials to be given a shot at a head coaching job while others get the opportunity after one year of proven success or sometimes even less. Just ask Jeff Saturday.
Just last year, Chiefs HC Andy Reid described Bieniemy's role in Kansas City in an effort to get him a fair shot. But now, the OC is forced to look for the opportunity to move to another team to prove himself in another situation.
Regardless of how NFL owners have treated him, one thing is clear, Bieniemy knows how to run an elite offense. The results speak for themselves and if he's hired by the Commanders, it won't be fun for the Cowboys to have to face his offense twice a year.
The Commanders are expected to roll with Sam Howell as the starting quarterback. If the 2022 third-round draft pick works out, the Commanders could suddenly have a legit unit with a decent roster to compete.
That path is made easier if the Commanders secure Bieniemy as OC, though.
It's worth noting that as of Wednesday, reports indicate he's a top candidate. He will be the eighth candidate interviewed by Washington.
While the Cowboys and Eagles will remain the favorites, things might be even tougher in the NFC East than last year because of the Giants and Commanders.
