It's a tradition unlike any other. Every year, non-Cowboys fans will try to convince everybody that it's no longer right to call what was once Tom Landry's unstoppable franchise the real America's Team.
Part of the tradition is to also argue about why the (insert a different team name every year) is now the one true owner of the nickname.
A recent study made by sports media company OhBets recently published its research on the most popular team in each state and you guessed it: The Dallas Cowboys lead the country in states.
That last sentence actually falls short. They're the most popular team in a whopping 15 states. The second-place New England Patriots only lead in five.
Here's what the full Top 6 looks like for reference:
- Cowboys, 15.
- Patriots, 5.
- Vikings, 4.
- Broncos, Eagles, Chiefs, 3 (tied).
As you can see, no one comes even close to the Cowboys' popularity.
And of course, fans would change those bragging rights for a Super Bowl win in a heartbeat. This is no consolation for the fanbase that has been waiting almost 30 years for an appearance in the NFC Championship game.
But circling back to the conversation around who deserves the famous nickname has no point. It's the Cowboys and it will likely always be the Cowboys.
The study put together by OhBets analyzed Google search data from the past 12 months.
