Seemingly everybody has an opinion on what the Chicago Bears should do with the first overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. While most involve a trade back scenario, ESPN’s Todd McShay envisions a different strategy for the Bears.
“Personally I would take Bryce Young if I was Chicago,” McShay said on ESPN’s Get Up. “I would do it because I think he’s an upgrade over Justin Fields and I want his rookie contract so I have five years.”
Prior to this statement, McShay referred to Young as a shorter version of Patrick Mahomes. As with any so-called draft expert, McShay has been wrong plenty of times before. It should also be noted that McShay isn’t reporting that this particular take is being considered in Halas Hall, but he’s basing this opinion on his evaluation of the Alabama product.
Fields showed signs of growth last season. While he still has a ways to go as a passer, his running abilities, maturity level, and leadership qualities are exactly what teams want in a young quarterback.
Not only would selecting Young at No. 1 overall be a complete and total gamble, but it would cost the Bears one of the best trade opportunities in the franchise’s history.
