Colts are a lock to trade for top pick in 2023 NFL Draft

The team is in prime position to accomplish something it hasn’t in years and it’s not going to let the opportunity slip away

The last two times the Indianapolis Colts took a quarterback with the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL Draft, they selected Peyton Manning and Andrew Luck.

If that's not enough reason for them to want to move up to No. 1 in the 2023 NFL Draft, then adding in the fact their AFC South rival, the Houston Texans, have the second overall pick should be plenty of motivation to work out a deal with the Chicago Bears.

The Colts currently sit at fourth overall and are in a good position to get one of the top quarterbacks in the draft, regardless of whether or not they make a move.

And Jim Irsay made it clear the Colts are very interested last week when he talked about Alabama quarterback Bryce Young.

But, the problem is the fact both the Bears and the Arizona Cardinals don't need quarterbacks. Meaning, other top-10 teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Detroit Lions could make moves to get in front of the Colts.

And, once again, let's not forget the Texans.

It's already hard enough to envision a world where Chris Ballard and Irsay are content with sitting back and risking teams jumping the Colts and taking their guy right out from under them. Not after last year.

2012 was different – the Colts had the No. 1 pick and didn't have to worry about a damn thing. They ran the show.

But this year is obviously different than 2012. And it's practically impossible to envision a world where they the above happen and let the Texans get their guy by possibly taking the Colts' guy at No. 2.

And when considering the franchise's belief in new head coach Shane Steichen, it makes all the sense in the world for the Colts to put themselves in a position where they can select any of the quarterbacks. Therefore, maximizing Steichen's chances of making it work at a high level.

Most important here is a point that will help set the tone for all of this: Team sources say the club believes that Steichen’s offensive versatility creates more options at the position. But the cherry on top of all of this is the fact that Bears general manager worked with Ballard from 2013-2016. Ballard was the Chiefs' Director of Player Personnel and Director of Football Operations for two years apiece while Poles served as the College Scouting Coordinator for all four years. There's zero doubt that connection will come into play, here.

There are some things in life that cannot be predicted and then there are some things that are pretty obvious.

The Colts trading up to No. 1 is easily the latter and it won't surprise me if a deal is made before the first day of the draft.
