The Chicago Bears have the No. 1 selection in the 2023 NFL Draft, but the expectation is for the team to trade the pick.
That's because the Bears have quarterback Justin Fields, which means they can trade the selection to a quarterback-needy team. Chicago would likely receive a significant amount of compensation in return.
But just because that's the expectation doesn't mean it's 100 percent what will happen.
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, the Bears are at least going to do their homework on quarterbacks Bryce Young, Cj Stroud, and Will Levis.
As debate rages on what the Chicago Bears do with the No. 1 pick, this quote from an NFL coach stuck with me, and speaks to Justin Fields' upside: "[The Bears] had no business being in some of the games they were in this year — that was because of Fields." The great quarterbacks can overcome roster deficiencies. Fields seems to have that element, even if he needs more polish as a pocket passer.
The Bears will do their homework on Young, Stroud and Will Levis atop the draft. But Fields' ceiling remains mighty high.

I don't think this report is any indication that Chicago is strongly considering a quarterback in the first round — I think it's just smart business by the Bears.
Chicago general manager Ryan Poles and his team need to make sure they leave no stone unturned during this rebuild. And part of that means speaking with all the top draft prospects.
If the Bears trade the No. 1 pick, they need to know which players will be targeted. And they need to do their own homework on those players to aid their trade talks.
For example, if Chicago discovers that Stroud is better than most folks think, perhaps they ask for more in a deal.
Either way, it's clear the Bears are going to make sure they look at every possible scenario before blindly making a trade involving the No. 1 pick.
