National college football reporter Mike Huesmann of MikeFarrell.com recently listed Tennessee Vols head coach Josh Heupel as a potential option to replace Jim Harbaugh at Michigan.

Huesmann also took a shot at Tennessee in the process.

Harbaugh is still the head coach at Michigan, but he's receiving significant interest from NFL teams. And a report from The Athletic on Tuesday suggested that Harbaugh will leave Michigan if he gets an offer from an NFL team.

Here's what Huesmann had to say about Heupel and Michigan:

Some might scoff at this but Heupel will get a call. Will he be Michigan’s next head coach? Unlikely. But he’d be foolish not to listen.

Only the most faithful and delusional of orange clad individuals would say Tennessee is a better job than Michigan. The Wolverines' position is better than almost all other jobs in college football. Heupel has done great at UCF and Tennessee, and he will not be short of suitors from the most elite of schools.

There are absolutely no credible reports connecting Heupel to Tennessee, so this is essentially just Huesmann throwing something out there.

I think the far bigger issue with Heupel being on this list is Huesmann's shot at the Vols.

He passionately believes that Michigan is a better job than Tennessee.

That's his prerogative — it's completely subjective. There's no way to determine what the "best job" in college football really is because it all depends on perception.

But he's wrong.

I imagine a lot of folks think Alabama is the best job in college football. But that wasn't the perception before Nick Saban took over in 2007. A job's "greatness" is determined by what it can be, not what it currently is.

I'd argue that there are about 10-15 programs that could consistently compete for national championships with the right coach in place.

That's a silly comment by Huesmann and considering his boss's history — Mike Farrell is the guy who unfairly took a shot at former Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith in 2021 — it's not surprising.

Farrell also predicted that Tennessee would go 4-8 in Heupel's first season (they went 7-6).

I wouldn't put much stock in this Heupel/Michigan talk. But that doesn't change that Tennessee needs to quickly work out an extension for Heupel to make him one of the highest-paid coaches in the SEC.
