All eyes were on Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes Sunday night, especially his ankle.
There probably hasn't been a more-famous ankle in NFL history. Everyone wondered how Mahomes' recent injury would affect his performance heading into the game and, well, everyone got their answer.
The final result was the Chiefs' second Super Bowl in four seasons and Mahomes' second Super Bowl MVP. Mahomes played great throughout all four quarters and his 26-yard scamper in the final 15 minutes was the catalyst behind Harrison Butker's game-winning field goal.
But, the win didn't come without a scare. And a big one, at that.
Earlier in the game, Philadelphia Eagles linebacker T.J. Edwards fell on Mahomes' ankle while chasing him down from behind. Mahomes' injured ankle proceeded to fold under Edwards' body weight and it was clear the sequence hurt the 2022 MVP.
"The only time my ankle was hurt was when I got tackled. It kind of rolled to the outside a little bit," Mahomes said Monday. "And once you have that high-ankle sprain, [if] any little tweak like that happens, it just really magnifies it.
"Coming into the game I felt way better than I did in the Cincinnati game… Luckily, we were able to get into halftime and get some new tape on there, and get some movement and try to get some mobility back."
Naturally, many are wondering where Mahomes' ankle injury goes from here and how it affects his 2023 season.
While that officially remains unknown, Mahomes gave Chiefs fans everywhere a sigh of relief -and an extreme sense of excitement- with Monday's self-prognosis.
"I'll for sure be ready for OTAs and everything like that," said Mahomes. "Obviously we'll have to continue the rehab [and] continue the treatment that we were doing. And just give it some rest. I think the best thing for it is going to be rest.
"[I'm] just trying to make sure that when we get to OTAs I'm ready to go. The only thing that might take a hit is my golf game. I'll have to take a few weeks off of that."
Let's just put it this way: Mahomes has found yet another way to convince us he is superhuman. Not only did he lead his team to victory one week after suffering the high-ankle sprain, which is an injury that typically immediately takes players off the field for at least two weeks at best, but he also led it to a championship and will be on track to participate in offseason activities like he normally does.
It's exactly why he's officially and undoubtedly the NFL's active G.O.A.T. – he just doesn't quit.
And it's exactly why he's most likely to be the best, ever, when it's all said and done.
