The 2022 NFL season hasn't technically ended yet, but already one of the biggest stories across the league is whether or not superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers will play for the Green Bay Packers in 2023.

There are basically three scenarios that can go down this offseason:

  • Rodgers returns to Green Bay
  • Rodgers retires
  • Rodgers is traded

The Packers could also release Rodgers, but the hefty dead cap hit ($99.7 million) that would come with that move makes that an extremely unlikely scenario.

Before the end of the season, I felt pretty confident that Rodgers would be back in Green Bay next season.

But after the last couple of weeks, I'm not so sure. Too many rumors are floating around. And Rodgers' tone suggests that he thinks he'll be on the move (though it's hard to tell what's real with Rodgers at times).

NFL front office executives apparently feel the same way.

One unnamed longtime team exec told The Athletic this week that he thinks the Packers are done with Rodgers and ready to move on.

“I think the Packers are done with him,” said the executive. “The time to jump off was last year. They missed the ability to maximize their compensation. And they missed the playoffs. When they moved Davante (Adams), they should have moved Aaron and said, ‘We are starting over and we have all these picks.’ They could have sent him to Denver.”

I don't think anyone knows what Rodgers actually wants. And we've seen no actual indication that Green Bay is "done" with the former NFL MVP.

This is setting up for a wild spring. And honestly, none of the three scenarios that Rodgers could choose would surprise me (and yes, he has to choose a trade despite not having a no-trade clause because of the threat of retirement and a potential contract restructure).

The only thing that would surprise me is if there's no drama surrounding Rodgers over the next month or two.

But I think we all know that won't be the case.
