Star prospect announcement could impact Detroit Lions 2023 NFL Draft plan

The Detroit Lions could lose the ability to wait in the 2023 NFL Daft after a recent announcement from one of the top prospects.

The Detroit Lions are in an interesting spot heading into the 2023 NFL Draft. With a lot of needs on the defensive side of the ball and plenty of room to grow in other areas, the team can't really miss with its first two picks.

One argument that has recently arisen for the Lions is that they need to use one of their first-round picks (at six or at 18) on quarterback Anthony Richardson.

Richardson has been a major riser over the past few months and has solidified himself as a first-round pick (originally near the middle of the round), and it made a lot of sense for the Lions to use the 18th to secure a potential option to become their face of the franchise.

That opportunity may be gone now.

After a draft cycle that already seems to have Richardson squarely in the top 10, a recent announcement in regards to the Combine could have Richardson's stock soaring even further.

While physical testing isn't the total sum of what a prospect can do, Richardson could prove himself as one of the most physically-gifted quarterbacks of all time with outstanding performances in each of the tests, and that could mean everything from a modern scouting standpoint.

Teams are going to take notice of these freaky numbers. Conversations are sure to start about Richardson going with the top pick after the Combine.

This is a very smart move by Richardson. The best Combine of all time for a quarterback will all but ensure that he is off the board very early in an NFL that values traits and projections above almost everything else, but it will add some pressure to the Lions.

Given the other options and needs, it will be tough for the Lions to trade up for Richardson, even if they like him, and their odds of getting him at 18 will almost be non-existent in the next week.

If the Lions really want their future quarterback in the first round, they will have to be aggressive. This news ensures that the Richardson market could be hotter and more varied than any player in the class.

Detroit needs to be ready if they want a shot at a franchise-changing player. Waiting won't pay off now.
