Tennessee Vols have opportunity to land unique recruit who could be a huge star in Knoxville
The Tennessee Vols have an opportunity to land a talented multisport athlete that could be a big star in Knoxville.
The Tennessee Vols could be on the verge of landing a unique recruit who could be a massive star in Knoxville.
Tennessee is one of the programs hoping to land 2024 four-star wide receiver Amari Jefferson.
Jefferson, 6-foot-1/195 lbs from Chattanooga, TN (Baylor School), is ranked in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 9 player in the state of Tennessee and the No. 52 athlete in the nation.
The unique thing about Jefferson is that he also plays baseball. In fact, he's actually committed to Tennessee for baseball.
But as Jefferson has emerged as a wide receiver recruit, it's become increasingly unlikely that he'll head to UT just for baseball.
Josh Heupel and the Vols' football staff, however, are recruiting Jefferson hard. And if UT signs him to play football, there's a good chance he'll play baseball for Tony Vitello, too (the football scholarship would supersede the baseball scholarship).
Jefferson told On3 that committing to Tennessee for football and walking onto the baseball team is a "massive possibility".
The Chattanooga native also detailed his relationship with Heupel and Vols wide receivers coach Kelsey Pope.
“The fact that they’re in-state and then also, I talk to Heupel and coach Pope a lot,” said Jefferson to On3. “They’re telling me that I’m a big priority in the 2024 class, especially being a kid down the road and that they’re excited to get me back up and they can’t wait to continue our relationship.”
If Jefferson commits to Tennessee to play football and ends up also playing a key role on the baseball team, he'd be a megastar in Knoxville. We've already seen how East Tennessee rallies around popular Vols players. Just imagine how much the fan base would embrace a dual-sport athlete (something that we rarely see in college sports anymore).
The Vols have plenty of competition for Jefferson. Georgia is also recruiting the talented wide receiver. Colorado, Oregon, and South Carolina are also in the mix. Jefferson also received an offer from Alabama this weekend.
