The New England Patriots know they have a major need to fill at wide receiver, and they’re working the phones to try to get a top option in their offense.

The Patriots are “working on” signing a top wide receiver a source said. We’ll find out if they can get to the finish line.

Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reported Wednesday that the Patriots have called about two trade candidates: Arizona Cardinals wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins and Denver Broncos wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.

NFL Media’s Mike Giardi reported Wednesday that the Patriots have remained engaged with free-agent wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Odell Beckham Jr. New England attended Beckham’s workout late last week in Arizona.

The Patriots allowed free-agent wide receiver Jakobi Meyers to walk in free agency on a three-year, $33M contract with the Las Vegas Raiders earlier this week. They currently have DeVante Parker, Kendrick Bourne and Tyquan Thornton as their top wide receivers.

Hopkins and Jeudy would serve as upgrades over Meyers, but New England would need to give up draft capital to acquire them. Smith-Schuster would likely have more upside than Meyers but also more risk. Beckham missed last season with a torn ACL and hasn’t had a 1,000-yard season since 2019.
