The Dallas Cowboys have made their decision on running back Ezekiel Elliott.

After seven seasons, the Cowboys are parting ways with the former first-round pick with produced two rushing titles (2016, 2018) and made three Pro Bowls.

What's important to note is that the Cowboys are designating Elliott as a post-June-1 cut which will save $10.9 million against the salary cap.

The Cowboys can still spend that amount during the current free agency period if they choose to do so, and they'll get those funds back in June. So, it's kind of like burrowing money in a sense.

Elliott was set to count $16.4 million against the salary cap in 2023 with a non-guaranteed salary of 10.4 million.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones spoke on Elliott’s departure.

“We have mutually agreed with Zeke that the best decision for everyone is that he will be able to experience free agency, and we can increase our flexibility and options as well," said Jones. "This is one of the toughest parts of operating a team.

"Moments like this come, and extremely difficult decisions and choices are made. For the franchise. For me personally. For players too. We will always have a special place and love for Zeke and what he means to the Cowboys family, both as a person and a player. That will never change."

Dallas currently has $4.3 million in salary cap space. They were in the red before restructuring the deals of quarterback Dak Prescott, right guard Zack Martin, and wide receiver Michael Gallup which opened up around $38 million in cap space.

The Cowboys recently used some of those savings to re-sign safety Donovan Wilson to a three-year deal and linebacker Leighton Vander Esch on Tuesday to a two-year deal.
