Cowboys: Donovan Wilson didn't want to play anywhere else
He’s ready to continue being a key part of the Cowboys defense.
The Dallas Cowboys had a reputation for not putting a lot of resources into the safety position. However, that's changed over the last few seasons.
Most recently, the Cowboys signed Donovan Wilson to a three-year deal for $24 million with $13.5 million in guarantees, and he couldn't be happier which he expressed in an interview with Hailey Sutton of DallasCowboys.com last week.
"Really, I'm just blessed and I'm excited to be around familiar faces and be back in the building," said Wilson.
This deal also seemed like it might not happen.
Dallas met with Wilson's representation at the Senior Bowl, but they were unsure if they wanted to pay market value for him to stay.
Deadlines tend to make deals in the NFL, and after working diligently, the Cowboys inked Wilson to a longer-term commitment on the second day of the initial free agency period.
"It means a lot," Wilson said. "We talk about brotherhood a lot and it was just a lot of hard work getting here and I'm just looking forward to the future."
Last off-season, the Cowboys signed safeties Jayron Kearse and Malik Hooker to two-year deals, and both has very solid campaigns in 2022 despite the former dealing with a few injuries.
Wilson, Kearse, and Hooker take the field simultaneously quite a bit in defensive coordinator Dan Quinn's "Big Nickel" package, and it's helped make the Cowboys' defense one of the best league-wide.
Wilson mentioned what it meant to him to be back with Kearse and Hooker for another run.
"I'm just excited about being back with my boys," said Wilson. "You can expect a lot of leadership and we're just going to fly around and do what we do."
This three-headed monster has played together for two seasons, and that bond was a key factor in Wilson's returning to Dallas.
"I feel like, just, the chemistry we had and just, how close we was, was a big part of me coming back too," Wilson said.
2022 was a career year for Wilson.
He led the Cowboys with 101 tackles and also logged an interception, two passes defended, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery, and five sacks.
Sutton asked if anything changed for Wilson in his fourth year.
"I just feel like I was just more prepared and everything just fell into place for me this year," said Wilson."
Wilson is a heat-seeking missile that is known for big hits rather it be defending the pass or giving support in the run game, and the former sixth-round pick says nothing will change going forward.
"The same hitman," Wilson said. "The same person ready to work every day, ready to get it done."
Without question, Wilson was one of the most important pieces for the Cowboys to bring back in 2023.
