The Detroit Lions have made waves through the first week and a half of the NFL’s free agency period. Most of the Lions’ new additions have been on the defensive side of the ball, but Pro Football Focus believes Detroit could be a potential trade fit for one of the league’s premier wide receivers.
Things didn’t exactly go according to plan for the Denver Broncos last season. That might be the understatement of the century. Fans saw Russell Wilson look like a shell of his former self which didn’t exactly cater to the satisfaction of the guys he was throwing to.
Rumors have run rampant including just about every receiver on the Broncos’ roster this offseason. That being said, Pro Football Focus sees the Lions as a potential landing spot for Pro Bowl WR Courtland Sutton.
“Rumors have been swirling all offseason in that basically the entire Denver receiving corps is on the trading block for the right offer as Sean Payton looks to change tack and craft an offense that Russell Wilson can succeed within. Sutton has looked like the most obvious odd man out from the beginning. Last season, he averaged just 1.55 yards per route run and registered six drops. At 6-foot-4 and over 210 pounds, Sutton has the skill set to be a true X-receiver, something that this free agency class and draft are light on. There are teams that have yet to find that player, or actively lost one, that could be interested.”
In 15 games in 2022, Sutton recorded 64 receptions for 829 yards and two touchdowns. Prior to the season, many had circled Sutton as a breakout candidate with Wilson coming to town.
While Sutton’s production from a season ago won’t blow anybody away, nobody is really suggesting he is in some sort of decline. At age 27, Sutton still has plenty left in the tank. He’s the same player today as he was in 2019 when he recorded 1,112 receiving yards on 72 catches and six touchdowns – all career highs.
If the Lions are willing to part with some draft capital, Sutton immediately upgrades Detroit’s passing attack to one of the most dangerous units in the NFC. General manager Brad Holmes has proven to be aggressive in acquiring talent, and Sutton would be another perfect fit in the Motor City.
