The Chicago Bears took an important step to improving its offensive line play by signing RG Nate Davis to a three-year deal in free agency.
Pass protection and run blocking plagued the Bears offense in the 2022 season, but Davis stands to be an immediate upgrade on the right side of the line. Head coach Matt Eberflus knows exactly what he’s getting in Davis after the two spent years squaring off against each other in the AFC South.
Eberflus’ connection with Davis dates all the way back his rookie season in 2019 when the Bears’ current head coach was serving as the Indianapolis Colts’ defensive coordinator.
“I went against Nate Davis all those years in Tennessee,” Eberflus said on Tuesday at the NFL owner meetings in Arizona. “Man, he’s an aggressive, our-style type of player, can really move people at the second level.”
Davis’ strengths come in the run game where he has been able to reach the second level of defenses on a consistent basis, previously paving the way for Titans star RB Derrick Henry.
He had his ups and downs in pass protection during his first three years in Tennessee, but only allowed 14 pressures and three sacks in 2022.
Davis is an important piece who helps fill a major need up front for Chicago’s offense. That being said, the team still has plenty of work to do in order to reshape an abysmal offensive line from a season ago.
