The Dallas Cowboys have put in the time to building one of the better secondary groups in the NFL. However, they will be looking to add more in the NFL draft, possibly as early as Day 2.
One name that has been linked to the Cowboys lately is cornerback Darius Rush out of South Carolina. In a piece released by ESPN on Thursday, Rush was mentioned as a player that's been talked about in Dallas quite a bit recently.
The Cowboys understand Stephon Gilmore might be just a one-year solution and could groom his eventual successor while he's still on the roster. Darius Rush (South Carolina) has been mentioned frequently in connection with Dallas.
The buzz surrounding Rush as a possible draft selection for the Cowboys started last week. Michael Renner of Pro Football Focus did a three-round mock draft, and he had the Cowboys taking Rush with the 90th pick.
Rush redshirted his freshman year with the Gamecocks in 2018. A year later, Rush was mostly a special teams contributor and switched from wide receiver to cornerback. By the time Rush was a junior, he became a starter.
In 2021, Rush totaled 26 tackles (three tackles for loss), an interception, and eight pass breakups. Rush was even better in his senior campaign as he racked up 38 tackles (two tackles for loss), two interceptions, seven pass breakups, and a forced fumble.
Rush impressed at the NFL combine by running a blazing 4.36 in the 40-yard dash, posting a 35-inch vertical jump, and a 10'1" in the broad jump.
At 6'2" and 198 pounds, Rush is a physical corner with size and length. He possesses skills when it comes to playing the ball in the air and at its highest point thanks to his background as a receiver. Also, Rush can be effective in man or zone coverage.
The Cowboys aren't likely to bring back veteran Anthony Brown and Jourdan Lewis is in the final year of his deal. So, Rush would certainly be a player the Cowboys can bring in and groom into a solid pro with the skill set he has.
