The Dallas Cowboys aren't lacking for edge rushers by any means. However, having more won't hurt either.
Despite most mock drafts having the Cowboys going running back, wide receiver, tight end, or offensive line in the first round, Pro Football Focus has them going in a different direction.
They have Dallas snagging Clemson edge rusher Myles Murphy with the 26th pick in their recent mock.
The most likely spot for running back, but it is still priced at +550 for the Cowboys to go that route with their first selection. The more likely option is tight end or edge, with the Cowboys continuing to prioritize defense.
Murphy made plays from the start of his freshman year at Clemson in 2020. In his first game, Murphy recorded seven tackles and two sacks against Wake Forest. For the season, Murphy racked up 37 tackles (10.5 tackles for loss) four sacks, three forced fumbles, and a pass breakup.
Second-team All-ACC honors were earned by Murphy as a sophomore as he compiled 39 tackles (14.5 tackles for loss), eight sacks, two forced fumbles, and two pass breakups. Murphy was a first-team All-ACC selection last season with 40 tackles (11 tackles for loss), 6.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and two pass breakups.
Murphy ran an unreal 4.52 in the 40-yard dash at 6'5" and 271 pounds. He also posted a 4.35 in the short shuttle, 7.2 in the three-cone, and a 31-inch vertical jump which makes him a rare athlete for his size.
Versatility is also a big part of Murphy's game. He logged 1,244 snaps outside of the tackle, 180 over the tackle, 117 in the B-gap, and 5 in the A-gap at Clemson per PFF.
Murphy is a very good bull rusher and also uses the long arm very well. He can take on double teams, be an effective run defender, and has a good motor when it comes to chasing plays down the line.
If the Cowboys do want to go edge early, Murphy should be in consideration.
