Why I'm WORRIED about DL Keion White as a 1st-rounder: NFL Draft Film Breakdown

In this film breakdown, we take a look at Georgia Tech DL Keion White.

White is often called "versatile" in scouting reports, when he is in fact more of a "tweener". He is too big to play on the edge, but not big enough to play 3-technique inside. He has good speed and length for a big man, but barring a physical transformation in the NFL, I find it hard to see Keion White excelling on anyone's defensive line. He has versatile potential, however, his film is too inconsistent, and for someone who is supposedly "NFL-ready", I find him getting bullied way too often. In my opinion, his best spot in the NFL will be playing over the tackle with his hand in the dirt, so he doesn't have to engage in double teams, and can use his length and speed to win around the edge.

Strengths:

  1. Freakish athleticism: Keion White possesses freakish athleticism, which is a major asset for a defensive end. His speed and explosiveness allow him to make plays in the backfield and chase down ball carriers from behind.
  2. Positional versatility: White has demonstrated positional versatility, meaning he can play multiple positions along the defensive line. This is a valuable trait as it provides defensive coordinators with flexibility in their game plans.
  3. Three-down skill set: White has the ability to contribute on all three downs, which is highly desirable in a defensive end. He has the speed to rush the passer on passing downs, and the strength to stop the run on rushing downs.

Weaknesses:

  1. New to the position: One of White's biggest weaknesses is his lack of experience at the defensive end position. He is still relatively new to the position, having played as an outside linebacker in college. This may lead to some growing pains as he continues to adapt to his new role.
  2. Unrefined pass rush package: While White has shown flashes of pass-rushing ability, his pass rush package is still unrefined. He needs to improve his repertoire of moves to consistently win one-on-one battles with offensive linemen.
  3. Raw technique: In addition to his unrefined pass rush package, White's technique is still raw in other areas as well. He needs to work on improving his hand placement, footwork, and overall body control to become a more well-rounded player.
