One thing the Dallas Cowboys still need on offense is speed, especially at the running back position.
Pro Football Focus recently had the Cowboys solve that issue on Day 3. They labeled Illinois runner Chase Brown as an ideal fit for the Cowboys on the final day of the NFL draft.
The Cowboys still want their two-headed running back room, and in this deep class they can do so without using a premium pick. Brown is one of the more explosive backs in the class, with 4.43 speed that showed on tape.
Brown spent his first collegiate season at Western Michigan before coming to Illinois. When he took the field for the Fighting Illini in 2019, Brown only played in four games before being redshirted for another year of eligibility.
Brown finally got to play significant snaps a season later when he totaled 540 yards and three rushing touchdowns in eight games. He would be named third-team All-Big Ten in 2021 with 1,005 yards and five touchdowns.
Last season was Brown's best. He garnered second-team All-Big Ten honors with 1,643 yards and 10 scores. Brown never rrushed for less than five yards per rush on the college level.
In addition to his speed, Brown showcased his overall athletic ability at the NFL Combine. He posted a 40-inch vertical jump and a 10'7" in the broad jump with 25 reps on the bench press at 5'9" and 209 pounds. Brown recorded a 9.80 RAS score.
Brown also showed some versatility to his game with 20 snaps as an outside receiver and 25 in the slot per PFF. He logged the third-most missed tackles last season and had the seventh-most yards after contact and runs of 15 or more yards. So, not only is he fast but Brown has balance, elusiveness, and some power.
The one-cut explosiveness of Brown makes him a potential late-round steal and could add a nice element to the Cowboys' running game.
