The New York Giants had been one of the teams potentially linked to drafting Clemson defensive lineman Bryan Bresee, despite their need to bolster the roster elsewhere, particularly on offense.
But after the latest news from Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Giants have added to their strength, signing former Super Bowl Champion A'Shawn Robinson in a very late free agent addition.
Robinson was a second-round pick out of Alabama in the 2016 NFL Draft, selected 46th overall by the Detroit Lions. His last three seasons were with the Los Angeles Rams, where he was a key contributor in their Super Bowl run and win during the 2021-2022 NFL season.
Last year, Robinson like many of his fellow teammates, fell into a post-Super Bowl hangover if you will, playing in only 10 games and not providing the staunch support he did the season prior.
In 17 games in 2021, Robinson recorded a career-high in tackles with 67 and tied his career high in sacks with two. Robinson just turned 28, and has his prime ahead of him, with the Giants as his potential team for the long run.
Robinson will also fit in perfectly with the Giants, providing depth at the key position of a nose tackle, and helping spell Dexter Lawrence when he needs a breather. And yes, I know Lawrence and the Giants aren't on the best of terms when it comes to contract negotiations, but this signing has little to do with that.
For one, Lawrence and Robinson are on two completely different levels when discussing the impact they have on a team. Robinson is a two-gapping force, who displays the ability to do the dirty work.
But Lawrence is as complete as they come at defensive tackle, with pass-rush support that rivals edge players, not to mention the interior presence that will leave offensive play-callers thinking twice about running up the middle.
And, Robinson and the Giants met back in March, showing that the two had mutual interest long before Lawrence publically displayed his displeasure with his current contract and missed the start of organized team activities.
What this signing, along with the Rakeem Nunez-Roches signing proves, is that the defense values depth and that the draft, at least at pick 25, will include a different position on Thursday night.
