When it comes to the Cowboys going this route on the first day, Bijan Robinson out of Texas has been the consensus, and rightfully so, he's a stud. However, Chris Collinsworth of Pro Football Focus provided another choice, and it's not a bad one.
Instead of Robinson, he has the Cowboys taking Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs.
I think tight end is under consideration here, but I think Gibbs is just really exciting to watch. Maybe he’d be a better fit in an outside-zone scheme, but he’s got so much fight in him through first contact. I think he gives them a chance to do some different things on offense as they move from Kellen Moore to Mike McCarthy calling plays.
James Foster of the A To Z Sports Film Room did a breakdown of what Gibbs brings to the table at the beginning of April.
"He ran a 4.36 in the 40-yard dash, and that time shouldn't be surprising to anybody that watched his film," Foster said. "He has elite acceleration. One cut and he can explode through an open hole and create a big play in the blink of an eye. And then he also has elite short-area quickness to make people miss in the backfield. He can stop his momentum instantly, send the defender flying in the opposite direction, and then regain that speed as he accelerates into the open field."
Gibbs began his collegiate career at Georgia Tech and played there for two seasons. He ran for over 1,200 yards during that time with 2021 being his best outing where he ran for 746 yards and four touchdowns which got him named first-team All-ACC and a second-team All-American nod.
He may have only spent one season in Tuscaloosa, but Gibbs was productive as an all-purpose back. He ran for 926 yards on 6.1 yards per rush and scored seven rushing touchdowns. Also, he caught 44 passes for 444 yards and three scores. As a result, Gibbs received second-team All-SEC honors.
Speed is exactly what the Cowboys need on offense and Gibbs is a perfect fit in that regard. His explosiveness between the tackles or on the edge is extraordinary, and his 103 receptions for 1,212 yards and eight touchdowns in college show just how dynamic of a weapon he is.
It's possible that Gibbs could be available in the second round when the Cowboys pick at 58. However, taking a guy like Gibbs in the first, regardless of the hesitancy by a lot of teams, wouldn't be a bad thing either, and it would give the Cowboys a two-headed monster with himself and Tony Pollard at the running back position.
