Chiefs: Winners and losers after picking 31st in 2023 NFL Draft
The Kansas City Chiefs made their 2023 NFL Draft pick at number 31, and while the board didn't plan out how we or the Chiefs thought it would, it still ended up allowing them to have a great pick, and a guy everyone will love. The Chiefs needed a wide receiver, right tackle, and edge […]
The Kansas City Chiefs made their 2023 NFL Draft pick at number 31, and while the board didn't plan out how we or the Chiefs thought it would, it still ended up allowing them to have a great pick, and a guy everyone will love.
The Chiefs needed a wide receiver, right tackle, and edge rusher. They need more than that, but those are the biggest needs. However, the board didn't allow them to take either of the first two positions, well, guys that they liked. So they went with edge rusher Felix Anudike-Uzomah, the hometown kid.
He is a great fit, and he will bring something to the Chiefs that they need desperately. But, bringing him in means someone wins and someone loses. The Chiefs have that too – winners and losers.
Winners: Chris Jones and Charles Omenihu
The Chiefs brought in Omenihu with the ability to play him on either the inside or outside, but we know that most of his success has come from the inside. This draft pick will allow the Chiefs to play Chris Jones and Omenihu inside at the same time more often. Now Jones has a running mate on the inside who is better than Derrick Nnadi.
Now Omenihu can be put in situations to succeed more often than he would have had they taken a different position. He would have had to play outside more than he will now. The Chiefs got a guy who can help create an elite defensive front for years to come.
They are set to do something only a few teams can say – have a dominant front four for years to come. It's going to happen, now it's just about when.
Losers: Mike Danna
Danna has been getting a ton of playing time the last year and even at the end of the 2021 season, mainly because when he played he made things happen. With the departure of Frank Clark, it was almost a sure thing that he would become the full tie starter. Now, he will be a bench guy by the end of the season, if I had to guess.
Now Danna could very well start the season as a starter, and they could bring Anudike-Uzomah along slowly as they did with Karlaftis last year. Either way, 2023 is a contract year for Danna, and it's likely he could be on a different squad in 2024.
