Kansas City has a track record of finding guys on day three that can be complete game changers and make key plays in huge games. The most recent example is, well, today. In other words, the Chiefs already have guys on their roster who fit that category.
Look at last season. They drafted secondary guys all in the later rounds and it turned out to be the best decision. Those guys turned out to not only be starters, for the most part, but guys who made huge plays in the postseason. Just the postseason alone they were great. You look at the regular season too and they were good. That's what the Chiefs do, and that's likely what they did in this draft.
The Chiefs went with a combination of offense and defense in this draft, but on day three it was all defense. They grabbed two more cornerbacks in Chamarri Connor and Nic Jones, and grabbed two defensive lineman in defensive tackle Keondre Coburn and defensive end BJ Thompson. All of these guys look like they have the potential to be great, and we know how good the Chiefs are at developing.
One of the guys they drafted, Thompson to be exact, received nothing but praise from a Chiefs area scout on a few qualities that stood out to him.
"You can tell this kid is motivated. He loves football. He wants to do well. All of our coaches have talked to him & love him. He's got the frame. This could easily gain another 20 pounds. He's just naturally athletic."
You love to hear those qualities in a draft prospect, and it's different hearing from the Chiefs scout on what they saw in him. That's what the Chiefs like, and Thompson could be a guy that contributes, even in 2023. The Chiefs are just too good at this whole drafting thing.
