Thanks to a well-timed and surprising offseason move by the Dallas Cowboys, they traded for five-time Pro Bowl cornerback Stephon Gilmore, and only sent a fifth-round pick to get it done.
Immediately, this gave the Cowboys one of the NFL's best starting duos at corner with Gilmore and Trevon Diggs. However, Dallas won't have to wait for the two to get well acquainted.
The Cowboys took part in the 10th Annual Reliant Home Run Derby on Wednesday to raise money for the Salvation Army and local charities. Diggs was asked while sitting in the dugout about his history with Gilmore, and it goes back quite a while.
"I talk to him a lot. I've been talking to Gilmore since I got into the league," Diggs said. "I always ask him questions from when I first started. Now, I got him on my team so I can bug him every day."
After hearing this, what happened last season when the Cowboys played the Indianapolis Colts makes sense. Immediately after the Cowboys won, Diggs got into a friendly scuffle with edge rusher Micah Parsons over who was going get Gilmore's jersey to take home.
Whatever knowledge Gilmore has been giving Diggs has worked wonders.
Diggs has played in 45 career games and has logged an incredible 17 interceptions, highlighted by 11 in 2021, the most in the NFL since 1981. So, Diggs averages an interception every two or three games which is an unreal statistic.
Last season, Diggs didn't have gaudy interception numbers with just three. However, guys like Ja'Marr Chase of the Cincinnati Bengals and Justin Jefferson of the Minnesota Vikings nearly called the authorities on Diggs because the way he shut them down was criminal.
Diggs has used his background as a wide receiver, and the wise words of Gilmore to turn himself into a two-time Pro Bowler and an All-Pro in his first three seasons. Now, with Gilmore in Dallas, Diggs won't have to wait to get on the phone to pick his brain, and he spoke on what else he wants to learn from the savvy veteran.
"How to stay consistent. How to slow the game down even more," said Diggs. "When I watch him when he plays, he literally plays in slow motion but it's really fast but he's so smart and so ball savvy that it looks like he's walking on water, and he just makes it look so easy. So, I want to learn how to do that and learn how to just take my game to the next level."
Diggs is already performing at the highest level for an NFL cornerback. If Gilmore can add to that, Diggs might see another wave if interceptions come in 2023.
