Dallas Cowboys rookie minicamp kicked off this weekend but there's one particular absence that's noteworthy at the very least. As opposed to usual absences involving injuries and surgeries, this one has nothing to do with the players as it is head coach Mike McCarthy who won't be around.

Per ESPN's Todd Archer, McCarthy "recently (underwent) a back procedure." There's no word on when McCarthy will be back even though OTAs officially start on May 22nd.

Of course, the Cowboys can handle rookie minicamp without the head coach. The weekend-long event is for the team's draft picks, undrafted free agents, and tryout players present on an "invite" basis. It's a process that welcomes the rookies to the team and the way of doing things in practice.

Sure, the team might dive into the playbook and practice style, but it's nothing that McCarthy needs to be around for. It's classwork and a "get up to speed" type of process.

OTAs will be different though, as the team heats up its preparation ahead of the 2023 NFL season. The Cowboys usually have perfect attendance at that stage of the offseason. Hopefully, McCarthy's surgery went well and he'll be back out there coaching Cowboy football.
