Everything is bigger in Texas, especially when it comes to football talent. The Dallas Cowboys recognized that and took a Lone Star State native in the third round of the NFL Draft, linebacker DeMarvion Overshown.
Of course, like many other rookies entering the league, Overshown had his dream come true when he heard his name called. However, being that he grew up around nothing but Cowboys fans in Tyler, Texas, and proclaimed he would play for Dallas when he was in the third grade, it had extra special meaning for Overshown.
The Cowboys' newest defender spoke on what it means to wear the star on his helmet.
"It's special," Overshown said. "Especially when you think back to like when you were a little boy, you have two dreams if you play football at a young age. It's either play for the Texas Longhorns or play for the Dallas Cowboys, and I got to do both. So, it's a blessing."
Overshown started his days at Texas as a safety. After two seasons, Overshown switched to linebacker, and he began to truly out in display what he could do.
The quickness with which Overshown dissects running plays and shoots gaps is one thing that sticks out about him. Also, Overshown's prowess when it comes to rushing the passer is pretty impressive as well whether it be from the edge or the interior as he racked up nine sacks, 52 pressures, and 30 hurries for the Longhorns.
Overshown was all over the field at Texas with 1,605 snaps in the box, 205 on the defensive line, 317 in the slot, 52 at free safety, and 11 at cornerback. Simply put, Overshown is a jack of all trades.
Cowboys' defensive coordinator Dan Quinn is well aware of that and has a plan of what Overshown will bring to his defense.
"Any and everywhere," Overshown said. "Right now, we're gonna start at the WILL (weakside LB) position, the last time I spoke with [Dan Quinn]. We really detailed that position, but anywhere, everywhere. He has a plan for me: just moving me around, kinda like what I was doing in college. [It's] kinda what you see right now with the Dallas defense — moving a lot of players around."
Once Quinn finds the right role for Overshown, he will add another dynamic athlete to an already stout defense, and he'll be utilized in many ways to take advantage of his entire skill set. As someone who always wanted that to happen, Overshown is overjoyed about his current situation.
"I can't stop smiling about it, even when people ask me," Overshown said. "And I say 'I'm a Dallas Cowboy' it's still like man that is crazy because as a little boy that's all I dreamed of being and now that I'm here. So, I'm just excited and I can't wait."
Fans of the Cowboys are anxious as well to see Overshown bolster the defense in Dallas.
