The New England Patriots needed a roster spot, and we now know how they're opening it.

The Patriots are placing veteran linebacker Raekwon McMillan on injured reserve, sources told A to Z Sports. The move creates space for New England to officially sign veteran tight end Anthony Firkser. Sources said Firkser and the Patriots had agreed to terms on a contract Thursday.

McMillan, who re-signed with New England on a one-year contract this offseason, will only be able to return to action this season if he's released with an injury settlement. He was on a one-year, $1.6 million contract.

The veteran linebacker initially signed with the Patriots in 2021, but he missed the season with a torn ACL. He played in 16 games, starting one, for New England last season and registered 35 tackles with five tackles for loss, one QB hit, one fumble recovery and one defensive touchdown.

McMillan started his career with the Miami Dolphins as a second-round pick out of Ohio State in 2017. He missed his rookie season with a torn ACL. He also played the 2020 season with the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Patriots are left with Ja'Whaun Bentley, Jahlani Tavai, Mack Wilson, Chris Board, Marte Mapu, Olakunle Fatukasi, Tere Hall, Jourdan Heilig and Calvin Munson at linebacker.
