Derek Carr is set to start the second phase of his career with the New Orleans Saints after nine years with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders.

The former second-round pick won't have to wait to form a bond with one of his new teammates.

New Orleans drafted quarterback Jake Haener in the fourth round of the NFL Draft last month. Haener went to Fresno State, the same program as Carr where he had his No.4 jersey retired and was a two-time MWC (Mountain West Conference) Player of the Year.

It's a lot easier these days for Heaner to pick Carr's brain, he's right next to him in the same drills/meeting rooms now as his teammate. Carr spoke on what that's been like so far.

"You know I've given my phone number out to almost every Fresno State quarterback and said 'whatever you need, I want you to break all the records. I want you to be better and I'm here to help' and he, I'll say consistently reached out," said Carr.

"For years, we'd get together. He came down to Bakersfield when I was down in Bakersfield we worked and helped him just you know teaching him things. Maybe he already knew them and maybe some things he didn't. And not just teaching him just talk and let him learn that way."

Haener didn't break Carr's program record of 12,842 yards but he did finish fourth in school history (9,013). He also earned multiple All-Mountain West honors during his three seasons.

In addition to Carrr, Haener will have Jameis Winston to help show him the ways of the NFL as he prepares for a few years of learning the position. However, he'll get his chance to show some juice during the preseason.

"He's a great player. He's gonna be awesome, he's gonna a have a great career," Carr said. "I'm excited because I get to help him. Not only beforehand but now I get to help him like on my team so it's fun for me."

Carr being in the building will make the adjustment for Haener to the NFL a lot smoother.
