The Kansas City Chiefs have a young guy on their team that is developing very well into the 2023 season.
Bryan Cook is a guy that really made some noise in the back half of the season. He played during the year, but he was often times that third safety we know defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo loves to use.
He played behind both Justin Reid and Juan Thornhill last year, but still saw some crucial snaps. This year, there is no doubt that his role will be bigger, as he has played in Spagnuolo's defensive system for a full year, and Mike Edwards the free agent signing, has not. Edwards will likely play the role Cook did last season.
But, is Cook ready for that role? Is he ready to be a starter and take on more responsibilities? Spagnuolo was asked how he is doing so far in OTAs, and his answer should give some fans excitement for how the back end of the defense could look in 2023.
"Terrific," Spagnuolo said when asked how Cook is doing in OTAs so far. "You know, Brian is one of those guys that he's a bold vocal guy. You know, even last year, I know he was kind of the third safety and kind of rolled in there on time. But as a young guy a year ago, I was impressed with how bold he was. Some of these guys come in, and some of these young guys are going through right now.
"And they're in a position where they got to communicate, and they never, they don't want to make a mistake, right? So they whisper it and I don't have but the guys that will blurt it out loud and proud whether they're wrong or whether they're right. I like those guys. B Cook was like that last year, and he's kind of just carried that into this year. Those guys are working pretty good together."
The Chiefs' defense will likely feature four sophomores in the secondary, which should do nothing but excite fans about what the future can look like for this defense. Of course, Cook is a part of that. The Chiefs took Cook in the second round last season for a reason. They really liked what they saw, and now, coming into a much bigger role, they believe he is ready.
Cook is a guy that made plays in the postseason last year, as he tipped a pass in the AFC Championship game that ended up being intercepted. So, the lights aren't too bright for him. To hear Spagnuolo say some of the things about him that he has is great, and should make you feel like this defense is only going to get better every year, especially in the secondary.
