It seems like every time I hop on social media to see what Detroit Lions fans are thinking, I see multiple fans saying that they would like to see the Lions sign former No. 1 pick Jadeveon Clowney.

I get it initially. Clowney's been a pretty decent player in during his nine year career. He's made a few Pro Bowl's and was an All-Pro in 2016. I can't help but think that Lions fans have his hit on Michigan running back Vincent Smith from back in his South Carolina days on their minds when they think of Clowney.

Is Clowney a good fit in Detroit? Let's talk it over. Let's go full Ted Mosby on this and break out the yellow legal pad for a nice round of pros and cons.

Pros

Alright let's start it off on the pros side. First off, the Lions have a really great edge rusher in Aidan Hutchinson right now. On the other side of him they have a bit of a revolving door that's full of questions. While most expect James Houston to just get this job, there's still so much that he has to do to show that he can be more than just a pass rusher the Lions bring in on Nascar packages. We haven't seen that yet. The Okwara brothers and Charles Harris all have something to show too after taking steps back and dealing with injuries.

The addition of Clowney could give the Lions an immediate answer on the opposite side of Hutchinson. The good thing for Clowney is that he doesn't have to worry about being the number one guy there. He can just go out and do his job and take advantage of the focus that's going to be put on Hutchinson.

The Lions could also probably get Clowney at the cheapest rate he's ever had. He's currently still waiting to be signed and the interest doesn't seem to be super high at this point. That could be because he's a veteran player and some vets aren't super excited about going through training camp. Teams tend to wait to sign players like that. For the record, Clowney has never said that and may not feel that way at all. Plus it's a totally normal thing and it doesn't make the player a bad guy.

Cons

For starters, Clowney is about to turn 31 years old. That's not to say that players can't play at that age, but there is some concern that the player is closer to the end than they are to their prime in most cases. The Lions could sign him to a one year deal though. It's not like this would be a long term thing. So while that's a con, it's not the biggest one.

The biggest one is health. Clowney hasn't played a full season since 2017. He's missed 19 games since then. He missed five games for the Browns last year. There's a real issue with keeping Clowney healthy.

The other issue is that Clowney was sent home last season after making comments about being unhappy being with the Browns and being sure that he wasn't coming back. The Browns made him inactive for the final game of the year.

There's nothing wrong with being upset about your usage or being upset with the team you're with, but it can be concerning when that emotion turns into something that can affect the team. Clowney would later apologize to his teammates. Specifically Myles Garrett. Who he claimed the Browns were favoring more than him.

I hate saying "character concerns." I hate almost as much as the "locker room cancer" thing that's thrown around so loosely these days. Many times without any merit at all. But there are some concerns about whether or not Clowney would buy into the Lions culture or not. Frankly, he would be second banana to Hutchinson. Can he handle that?

Conclusion

At the end of the day, I don't think the Lions should make this move. While I do think they could use something a little more concrete on the other side of Hutchinson, they should look for that elsewhere. Besides, it seems as though Clowney kind of wants to go back to the Texans.
