The New Orleans Saints suffered a pretty significant loss this offseason after edge rusher Marcus Davenport signed with the Minnesota Vikings.
New Orleans did re-sign edge rusher Tanoh Kpassagnon to a two-year deal before his departure and they drafted Isaiah Foskey in the second round, but the Saints could still use a veteran presence on the edge.
Former first-round pick, Jadeveon Clowney, was released by the Cleveland Browns in March, and Pro Football Focus thinks the Saints should try to bring him in, again.
The Saints came close to adding Clowney a few years ago and circle back here to add a veteran opposite Cameron Jordan amid a lot of youth filling up the rest of the defensive line. The Saints used the No. 40 overall selection on Notre Dame edge defender Isaiah Foskey but still could stand to improve on the edge, with not much beyond veteran Jordan and the underrated Carl Granderson.
Clowney is coming off a down year in the pass-rushing department, totaling only 29 pressures and two sacks, but a change of scenery could allow him to thrive again, similar to what happened in his first year in Cleveland. Clowney is one of the best run-defending edges in the NFL over the past decade and should benefit from a lot of talent around him.-Brad Spielberger, PFF
This isn't a knock on Kpassagnon, he's logged 10 starts and racked up six sacks during his two seasons in New Orleans, or Foskey who has tremendous promise after an extremely productive college career. However, Clowney has more experience and is simply better at the moment getting to the passer and stopping the run.
Clowney is going into his 10th season so he won't cost much on the final side, and the Saints currently have $14.2 million in cap space to spend. He's not what he once was, but Clowney could provide a quality veteran starter opposite Jordan, at least for the 2023 season.
Saints offseason addition feels right at home
He’s not regretting his decision to sign one bit.
