Things don't seem to be getting better for the Las Vegas Raiders and their star running back Josh Jacobs.

All offseason the Raiders have been trying to work out a long-term contract for Jacobs, who is looking to get paid. The team levied its franchise tag on Jacobs, but a long-term deal remains far off, and in a recent report on ESPN, there isn't much momentum for a long-term contract.

The Raiders have two weeks to try and work it out. But Jacobs may be willing to continue to hold out, missing some games as he searches for the contract he is looking for.

On Sports Center, the Jacobs and Raiders relationship was described as "tenuous." And that is a report that feels accurate.

Running backs often have to fight for a second contract. And most times, teams that fork over the money to a good running back end up regretting that decision two or three seasons later.

The Raiders are trying to avoid that with Jacobs, wanting him to play under the franchise tag for a year. But Jacobs, rightfully so, wants to find some long-term security and the dollar amount that he has earned.

Without Jacobs, the Raiders' offense may be pedestrian at best.

In 2022, he was the team's most consistent offensive player. He collected numerous amounts of game-winning plays while also being one bright spot-on what became a lackluster season.

But the question the Raiders and Jacobs currently face is this: Is a good running back worth paying top dollar? Or should the Raiders approach the position by a committee of cheap contracts?

The former is the fun decision. The latter is the smart one. At some point, the Raiders must cut their losses, regardless of how talented Jacobs may be.

Jacobs, who will be a free agent in March when the new league year begins (if he's not extended first), said this week that he's OK with playing on the franchise tag in 2023 under one condition. He […]
