The Dallas Cowboys are always around big deals whether it's one of their players being signed or business ventures off the field thanks to the marketing genius of team owner Jerry Jones.
It was reported back in May that a docu-series starring Jones was in the works courtesy of NFL Films and Skydance Sports. Now, it's set to be seen by the masses.
On Monday, it was brought to light that Netflix is close to securing the rights to the 10-part series for $50 million.
Netflix emerged as the winner of a bidding war with ESPN, Amazon, and other companies who had interest.
The Jones project includes never-seen footage and interviews with Cowboys stars like Troy Aikman, Michael Irvin, and Emmitt Smith. And it has already drawn comparisons to The Last Dance—and that show’s heavy dose of 1990s nostalgia—since it focuses on the Cowboys’ rise as “America’s Team,” with their three Super Bowls in the early ’90s under Jones’ hands-on, star-powered ownership. It’s another sign of the booming market for premium sports docs, which is likely to grow hotter the longer the writers (and possibly actors) are on strike.-Matthew Belloni, Puck.News
This will be the first project that Skydance Sports and the NFL have put together since the announcement last November of Skydance Media and its partnership with the league to create a global multi-sports production studio. Jones's daughter Charlotte, the organization's Executive Vice President and Chief Brand Officer, will serve as an executive producer on the project.
The Cowboys are still looking for their first Super Bowl since the glory days of the 1990s. However, one thing is for certain, Jones will make sure they're in the spotlight until it happens.
