Steelers Tanner Morgan, Mason Rudolph QB battle Pittsburgh Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have zero questions about who will be their starting quarterback come September.

They even have a sound plan in place at the backup spot following the offseason extension of Mitch Trubsiky.

But the race for QB #3 may not be over quite yet, with Mason Rudolph potentially having his hands full with one UDFA signal caller:

Tanner Morgan

The Pittsburgh Steelers signed Morgan as an undrafted free agent following the 2023 NFL Draft. Some thought that meant he would slide into the QB #3 spot, especially given the Steelers had yet to re-sign Mason Rudolph at that point.

But then came the approval of the NFL's new emergency QB rule, with Pittsburgh seemingly being ahead of the curve and putting pen to paper with Rudolph just days before.

But according to Emory Hunt of CBS Sports, that doesn't mean you should count Morgan out just yet:

"I like Morgan. I think he has a lot of game experience and we saw glimpses of what he could potentially be at his best when he had Bateman (Ravens WR and former Minnesota teammate Rashod Bateman) and those guys and just hope that they could tap into that," said Hunt via The Ross Tucker Football Podcast.

"But I think this is an opportunity for him. I know Pittsburgh brought back Mason Rudolph, and I know they have Mitch Trubisky and they like him in the building. But this is an opportunity for Tanner Morgan to try to catch one of those guys, and I do feel like he's going to be on the practice squad at least because there's too much talent to just disregard so I feel like he's in a good spot," finished Hunt.

Morgan certainly has his work cut out for him, as does any rookie UDFA. But if Hunt's intuition is right, don't be surprised if Morgan is wearing black and gold come September.
