Chase Burns was the definition of electric down the stretch for Tony Vitello and the Tennessee Vols this season. After a role switch in the middle of SEC play, he stepped up as the team's closer late in the year. He dominated some of the best competition in the country and was a massive reason that the Vols made another trip to Omaha.
Unfortunately, he won't be returning to Tennessee next season. Earlier in the offseason, he announced that he was entering the transfer portal. Tonight, he made it official that he will be transferring to Wake Forest University. Wake was another team that made an Omaha run this past season and expect to return there with regularity going forward.
The Vols will have have the tough task of replacing Burns in the back-end of their bullpen. Don't be shocked if Vitello goes out and finds a proven reliever that their staff turns into a dynamite closer for next season. It's possible that player may already be on the roster, too.
There were discussions around social media about the possibility that Burns wanted another chance to be a starter. It is unknown whether or not the Vols were willing to go that route. Regardless, he will head to the ACC and potentially see the Vols in the postseason as a competitor next year.
