Welcome back to another edition of our weekly Detroit Lions mailbag series. We're coming to you a little late this week. I'm going to get sappy for a second here and then we'll get to the football stuff. It's been a hard week for me with the loss of my step-mom. I want to thank Lions fans for all their support. This is truly such a great community. Your kind words and condolences helped me get through a hard time. You questions this week also helped me keep myself busy. I thank you all. Let's jump into it.
That's sort of a hard one to answer at the moment. Both players are in similar positions. While Mims did just get traded for, the Lions traded a conditional sixth round pick to the Jets. The conditions of that pick is that Mims has to make the roster. So like Green, he's sort of starting from the bottom and has to prove himself.
The obvious advantage that Mims has is that he's played in NFL games and Green hasn't. That's why at this point, I would say that the answer is yes. Green will probably wind up on the teams practice squad and will have a better chance at the 53 next season unless injuries bring him up this year.
It was definitely his pass rushing ability that caught the eye of NFL teams. Houston had ort of an interesting college career. He played linebacker at Florida and then decided to transfer to Jackson State for a better opportunity. It was there that coaches used him primarily as a pass rusher due to his ability to bend around offensive linemen. That's what got him drafted.
In terms of whether or not he's for real, we still have to see that. Right now we know that he can pass rush, but we don't know if he can do anything else. This will be a big year for him to show what he can do.
For me it's all about the running back battle. I love the skill positions. Craig Reynolds defending his spot against Mohamed Ibrahim and Jermar Jefferson should be a blast to watch once the preseason games get going. We'll be able to get some big answers there.
I know others will disagree, but I think it's Ibrahim's job to lose. We'll soon see if I'm wrong.
I think he can. He has everything he needs to get it done. Ben Johnson is still here and he's got a lot of weapons to utilize. The big question is going to be whether or not he can keep up the pace with his ball security. He's 79 pass attempts away from breaking Aaron Rodger's NFL record of most passes without an interception. That'll be the first big test. If he can get past that, he can do anything.
