The Indianapolis Colts are set to open training camp on Wednesday. Which really sets the stage for the upcoming 2023 NFL season and the kickoff of the Shane Steichen era.

Steichen and staff are working to prepare the team to make some noise and perhaps surprise in the regular season. Star running back Jonathan Taylor is among the key players that the first-year regime will be counting on in a big way.

But Taylor is currently waiting for a contract extension offer from the Colts. The 2019 second-round draft selection is eligible for a long-term deal this offseason. Yet, the two sides have not been able to workout a framework on a new contract.

Given the state of the running back market in free agency, that should not come as a surprise. Especially since Taylor is coming off a season in which he was plagued by the injury bug and posted career lows in yards and touchdowns.

With that said, Taylor is still a key component of the Colts' offensive attack. He led the NFL in rushing just two seasons ago and is among the elite at the position. According to Colts insider Stephen Holder, Taylor is irritated about the ongoing situation.

Holder explains that there was a time where Taylor would have been okay playing out his rookie contract. But that has since changed with the way that the market has impacted fellow running backs around the league.

"He has been very vocal about wanting a new deal," Holder said on ESPN. "The next question, on Tuesday, is will Jonathan Taylor show up (for training camp)? If he does, does he conduct himself as normal, or does he take a harder stance?"

The Colts insider went on to say that Taylor has been "growing increasingly irritated" regarding the current situation and lack of a new deal. Undoubtedly, that will be one of the biggest storylines to track during Indianapolis Colts training camp.
