Life in the NFL can be tough, especially when it's triple digits with the heat index at Pittsburgh Steelers training camp in Latrobe.
So maybe it was the heat, or perhaps it was the rugged mountain he had to climb when it comes to making the roster.
But one new Steelers addition is already headed out of town:
Steelers’ Rookie UDFA FB Monte Pottebaum Retires From NFL

Pottebaum was signed on Saturday of the 2023 NFL Draft after he went undrafted out of Iowa. A traditional FB that is largely extinct in the modern NFL, Pottebaum was always going to be a longshot to make the roster, so instead of being fired, he said "I retire."
Pottebaum had a lengthy career with the Hawkeyes that included:
- 45 games (13 starts) at Iowa (2019-23)
- 20 rushes (0.4 avg.) for a total of 82 yards and one touchdown
- 10 receptions for 85 yards
So while we may never know the reason behind his decision, Pottebaum brings one less mullet to practice now (LB Cole Holcomb being the other) and leaves Steelers fans before they even really got to know him.
His short time with the team will likely be memorable for the time being however, given his hair and the way he exited. So cheers to Pottebaum. Maybe he just wanted to say he made it to NFL camp.
And now he can.
Steelers’ latest move proves no one on the roster is safe
So much for being pleased with that position
