The Baltimore Ravens had to make sure that quarterback Lamar Jackson had the right pieces around him if they were going to invest a long-term commitment in him going forward.
Baltimore not only signed wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and selected Zay Flowers in the first round, but they brought in former first-round pick Laquon Treadwell in June.
Guys like Rashod Bateman, Nelson Agholor, and Devin Duvernay, who has impressed this summer, will all be in the mix for who makes the final roster at receiver. When asked about that tough decision specifically that's on the table for the Ravens, Jackson responded with this.
"That's Eric's [DeCosta] job, not mine," Jackson said jokingly on NFL Network. "I'm for grateful for that because you know, we've got a lot of great guys in the receiver room right now. And they're giving us their best shot right now, you know, they're trying to earn a spot out there on the field.
"OBJ, a household name. Zay, you know, he's working his way in the system. Sky’s the limit for those guys. It's a lot of great guys in that receiver room like I said."
The battle will certainly be intense.
Beckham doesn't have any worries about making the roster, but he's looking to show that he can still be a dynamic playmaker in the NFL after missing the 2022 due to his ACL tear. For Flowers, it's simple, he's a rookie, a first-rounder at that, so he automatically has huge expectations placed on him.
Agholor is coming off a subpar year with the New England Patriots, and Bateman, who is currently on the PUP list, wants to bounce back from a foot injury that plagued him last season.
Although Duvernay has made the Pro Bowl for two consecutive seasons, he's in a contract year, so he's looking to show his worth for a big payday. Then there's Treadwell, who has played for four different teams in as many seasons, he simply is searching for a permanent NFL home in Year 8.
The motivation is there for so many guys in the Ravens' receiver room that it may look like WWE's Royal Rumble for who earns all the roster spots to get a chance to shine in Todd Monken's offense.
