Of all the wants/desires/goals that come with the NFL preseason, arguably the biggest of them all is the desire to stay healthy during games that don't matter.
Unfortunately, that wasn't the case for the Green Bay Packers on Friday night against the Cincinnati Bengals.
The Packers suffered multiple injuries that included names such as running back Tyler Goodson, offensive linemen Caleb Jones and Luke Tenuta, and tight end Tyler Davis.
It's the latter injury that hurts the most, however. Packers head coach Matt LaFleur confirmed as much after the game that Davis' knee injury is a significant one. NFL Network's Tom Pelissero later reported Davis' injury is a torn ACL and he will miss the rest of the season.
"Unfortunately, Tyler Davis, that's gonna be a pretty significant injury," LaFleur told reporters after the game. "Not quite sure what the word is on [Luke] Tenuta, yet, and Caleb Jones. But TD, you know, my heart hurts for him. He's been a key contributor to our success over the last couple of years. And you know, whether it's on teams or carving out a role in our offense – he's a consummate professional, he's a great teammate. Just a great human and you know, we're gonna miss him."
Davis is a key contributor on the Packers special teams unit
A lot of fans have probably never heard of Davis, but as LaFleur said: he's a key player on the team. He caught a five-yard touchdown from backup QB Sean Clifford on Friday night during the Bengals before going down with the injury.
Per Pro Football Focus, Davis led the Packers in special teams snaps (344) last season and he finished tied for the third-most special teams tackles, as well. He either led the team or tied for the most snaps in every phase of teams except the field goal blocking unit.
It's a big blow to what was an improving special teams squad under Rich Bisaccia and it's certainly worth monitoring the Packers' future response via their roster decisions.
