Detroit Lions defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs caused a bit of a stir on Sunday when he took to Twitter with a cryptic tweet after being absent from the Lions practice facility on Saturday. We later found out on Monday that the Lions have benched Buggs for the first game of the season against the Chiefs. On Tuesday we got some answers from Campbell as to why the Lions made that decison.
"Yeah, we base everything off the tape, period." Campbell said. "So I've spoken to Buggs and that stays between us. but yeah, we feel like the guys that are best prepared to go this week for this game, those are the guys that will be up."
This seems like a situation that might have been brewing for a while now. Detroit Free Press's Dave Birkett reported on Tuesday that Buggs missing the Lions voluntary workouts during the offseason could have something to do with it.
It became clear during training camp that Benito Jones and Levi Onwuzurkie were starting to move ahead of Buggs on the Lions depth chart. Buggs playing in the fourth quarter of the Lions final preseason game against the Panthers really showed that. Benito Jones taking all the first team reps the following week showed it even more.
All is not lost for Buggs though. Campbell says there's still a pathway back to where he was last season when he started 13 games for the Lions.
"Yeah, absolutely. And you know, he's been told that. But it's no different than I mean, honestly, any of these players, and that includes practice squad players, we tell them I mean, you have an opportunity, make the most of it. And you got to show us in practice."
We'll see where things go heading into Week 2 against the Seahawks.
I had the same surgery as Levi Onwuzurike. What he’s doing is amazing
On Monday night the Detroit Lions started a new series called Beyond. Lions defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike penned an article and detailed a lot of what's been his career thus far. The one thing that obviously stands out the most is that Onwuzurike noted that he had spinal fusion surgery. The exact surgery that Onwuzurike had […]
