It's only the first game of the NFL season for the Detroit Lions, but Jared Goff could make a little history in this game. Here's how.
Goff has thrown 324 consecutive passed without an interception. That's currently sitting at fifth all time. Goff is 79 passes away from beating Aaron Rodgers record of 402 that he set in 2018. There's no shot he does that Thursday night. The all time record for most passes in a game is 70 set by Drew Bledsoe in 1994. So I guess it's a tiny bit possible, but incredibly unlikely.
What Goff can do is move his way up the list though. Right now he's nine passes away from passing Derek Carr for fourth pace and 34 passes away from passing Tom Brady for third. Both of those are very doable.
Goff averaged just over 34 passes a game in 2022, so 35 passes without an interception on Thursday night can put him in third place.
Then he'll just have Tom Brady (yes, he did this twice) at 399 and Aaron Rodgers at 402. There's a very good chance that Goff could break this record by Week 2, but Week 3 might be more realistic since Goff would have to throw more than 40 passes in Week 2 if he throws 35 on Thursday night.
We'll keep an eye on this one for sure. The good news is that Goff has been the most mistake free quarterback in the league in the last 23 games. So that should help.
